The theory test is made up of two parts - a multiple choice element and a hazard perception element. Candidates take both parts of the theory test on the same day. Candidates need to obtain a pass in each element at the same test session to receive their theory pass certificate (if you fail either the multiple choice element or the hazard perception element then you will fail the whole theory test and have to be re-tested on both of the elements). The multiple choice element of the test ... This part of the exam consists of 35 multiple choice questions, which appear on a computer screen in front of you. You enter your answers on a touch-screen computer system by touching the box next to the appropriate statement or statements on the screen. You need to answer 30 or more of the questions correctly to pass this element of the theory test. You have 40 minutes for this part of the test. The hazard perception element of the test ... In the hazard perception element you are shown a number of 1 minute video clips filmed from a car. Each clip contains one or more developing hazards. Each candidate is tested on 14 film clips chosen at random from a series of two hundred. You are asked to indicate (by clicking the mouse) as soon as they see a hazard developing which may need the driver to take appropriate action e.g. changing speed or changing direction. You're marked on your responses - the sooner a response is made, the higher the score. You have approximately 15 minutes for this part of the test.
